Code P0171 / P0174: lean mixture, the 5 causes to check

What the code means

The control unit aims for a precise air-fuel mixture. The upstream O2 sensor constantly tells it whether the exhaust gases are too rich or too lean, and it corrects the injection. When it has to add too much fuel for too long, it stores P0171 (system too lean, bank 1). On engines with two rows of cylinders (V6, V8, some 4-cylinder engines with a dual manifold), bank 2 gives P0174.

Is it serious?

A lean mixture raises the combustion temperature: over time, it risks misfires, knocking, and damaged valves or catalytic converter. It is not an absolute emergency, but do not drive around with it for months. Typical symptoms: unstable idle, hesitation when accelerating, hard starting, higher fuel consumption.

The 5 causes, from most to least likely

  1. Air leak after the MAF sensor: cracked intake hose, split turbo hose, intake manifold gasket, hardened breather (PCV) hose, PCV valve stuck open, dipstick seal. Air gets in without being measured.
  2. Dirty or faulty mass air flow sensor (MAF): it underestimates the air. Often comes with a P0101. See our P0101 / P0102 guide.
  3. Insufficient fuel pressure: clogged fuel filter, worn pump, regulator. See also P0087 / P0191 for diesels.
  4. Dirty injectors: especially if the code comes back after cleaning the intake.
  5. Exhaust leak before the upstream sensor or an ageing upstream sensor: the sensor “sees” oxygen and assumes a lean mixture.

What to check first

  1. In the “Sensors” screen of DiagAuto AI, display the STFT (short-term fuel trim) and LTFT (long-term fuel trim) for the affected bank.
  2. At idle, a strongly positive LTFT (+15% or more) that drops back at 2,500 rpm → the typical signature of an air leak (it weighs more when the engine draws in little air).
  3. A positive LTFT at all engine speeds → think MAF sensor or fuel pressure.
  4. With the engine idling, carefully spray a little brake cleaner or “leak detection” product around the hoses and the manifold: if the idle changes, you have found the leak. (Preferably with the engine cold, away from any heat source.)
  5. Inspect every intake hose by hand: bend them and look for cracks at the bends.

Should you clear the code?

After the repair, yes (the app clears the engine codes after confirmation, without reprogramming anything): clear them, then drive 50 to 100 km mixing town and open road. The long-term fuel trims readjust gradually.

Indicative cost (France, 2026)

Hose or gasket: €20 – €150. MAF sensor cleaning: €10 of product. New MAF sensor: €60 – €250. Fuel pump: €200 – €600. Injector cleaning: €80 – €200.

Frequently asked questions

P0171 and P0174 at the same time: what does it mean?

Both banks are lean: the cause is shared by both (MAF sensor, air leak on the intake manifold, low fuel pressure), not a single injector.

What does a fuel trim of +20% mean?

The control unit is adding 20% more fuel than its map calls for to make up for a shortfall. If it stays steadily above +10% to +15%, there is a problem.
