Code P0087 / P0191: diesel fuel pressure, from the filter to the HP pump
What the code means
Diesel fuel is drawn by a low-pressure pump (in the tank or on the HP pump), filtered, then compressed by the high-pressure pump into the common rail. A sensor measures the actual pressure, and a regulator adjusts it. If the actual pressure stays too far below the target, the control unit stores P0087. If the sensor sends an out-of-range or implausible value (for example, pressure with the engine off), it is P0191. P0088 = pressure too high, P0089 = regulator fault.
Is it serious?
Yes. Symptoms: long cranking, loss of power, limp mode, jerking, stalling when warm, an engine that refuses to restart. Stalling on a motorway is dangerous. And the more you drive, the more the HP pump wears while running short of fuel.
The most common causes
- Clogged diesel fuel filter (or an overdue service, or water in the filter).
- Very low fuel level or contaminated diesel (water, poor-quality biofuel, wrong fuel).
- Faulty or dirty pressure regulator (on the rail or on the pump).
- Injectors leaking back to the return line: some of the fuel goes back to the tank instead of being injected, and the pressure collapses. Injector return test at the garage.
- A weak or blocked low-pressure pump (strainer in the tank).
- A worn high-pressure pump.
- For P0191 specifically: the rail pressure sensor or its wiring.
What to check first
- In the “Sensors” screen of DiagAuto AI, display the fuel rail pressure: this is the actual measured value, when the car provides this data (the target value is not read by the app). Ignition on, engine off, it should be close to 0 bar: if it shows several hundred bar, the sensor is giving false readings (P0191). With the engine running, a pressure that collapses under acceleration points towards P0087; the precise comparison with the target is done at the garage, with the manufacturer's tool.
- Check the date of the last diesel fuel filter. If it is more than 40,000 km or 2 years old, replace it (€20 – 60 for the part, 30 min of work on most engines; bleed the air afterwards).
- Check that the tank is not nearly empty and that the last fill-up did not coincide with the code appearing.
- If the problem persists, have the garage carry out an injector return test (measuring tubes) and a low-pressure measurement. That is what tells an HP pump apart from an injector, and the price difference is huge.
Should you clear the code?
After replacing the filter, yes (the app clears engine codes after confirmation, without reprogramming anything, and offers to save the report just before). For everything else, let the garage clear them after the repair: the codes and the “Data at the time of the fault” (the freeze frame) help them understand.
Indicative cost
Indicative, France 2026. Diesel fuel filter: €50 – 120 fitted. Pressure regulator: €100 – 300 fitted. Rail sensor: €80 – 200 fitted. Injector: €250 – 600 each, fitted. HP pump: €600 – 1,500 fitted (more if the system is contaminated).

Frequently asked questions
My car stalls when warm with a P0087. What is the most likely cause?
When hot, diesel fuel is thinner: a worn high-pressure pump or injectors leaking back to the return line can no longer hold the pressure. But still start with the diesel fuel filter: it is the cheapest check.
Is it dangerous to drive with a P0087?
The engine can cut out without warning, including on a motorway, which is dangerous. And a high-pressure pump that breaks up sends metal particles through the whole system: the repair goes from a few hundred to several thousand euros.
