Glow plug light flashing on a diesel: it's not (just) the glow plugs

What you are seeing

The small orange coil symbol, which normally lights up for 2 seconds when you switch on the ignition, starts flashing while you drive. Often at the same time, the engine loses power or goes into limp mode.

What the flashing really means

On many European diesels, the manufacturer uses the glow plug light as an engine fault warning. Flashing means: “the injection control unit has detected a fault, limp mode possible”. The cause can be anything in the engine management. That is why you should read the fault code rather than replace the glow plugs blindly.

The most common causes

  1. Fuel pressure (filter, regulator, pump) → P0087 / P0191.
  2. Turbo / boost (P0299, P0234) → Loss of power on hills.
  3. EGR valve → P0401.
  4. DPF (diesel particulate filter) → P2002 / P2463.
  5. A faulty injector (P02xx codes, injector flow corrections out of range).
  6. Mass air flow sensor → P0101.
  7. Accelerator pedal sensor, camshaft or crankshaft position sensor.
  8. And sometimes the glow plugs or their relay (codes P0380, P0670 to P0674): hard cold starts, white-grey smoke for the first few minutes.

What to do right away

  1. Read the codes with DiagAuto AI. On diesels, the key codes are usually in the engine control unit, but some hide in other control units: the app's control unit scan shows which ones report faults and how many, and reads their codes on compatible control units.
  2. Note the “Data at the time of the fault” (the freeze frame: rpm, load, temperature).
  3. If the code points to the glow plugs (P0670 to P0674), test them: engine cold and ignition off, disconnect each plug's supply wire and measure the resistance between its terminal and ground (a few ohms; a broken plug reads infinite), or have it done.
  4. If the code points elsewhere, follow the matching guide.

When to go to the garage without waiting

Flashing + limp mode that does not clear after a restart, + smoke, + abnormal turbo noise, or a fuel pressure code (risk of damaging the high-pressure pump).

Frequently asked questions

The glow plug light comes on at start-up and then goes out. Is that normal?

Yes, that is its job: it shows the glow plugs are heating. Wait for it to go out before starting, especially in cold weather. The problem is when it flashes while you are driving.

How much does it cost to replace the glow plugs?

Indicative, France 2026: €15 to €40 per plug, 4 plugs, 1 to 2 hours of labour. Watch out for seized plugs that snap on removal: on some engines the bill climbs quickly.
