Code P0401: clogged EGR valve, clean it or replace it?
What the code means
The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve sends part of the exhaust gases back into the intake to lower the combustion temperature and reduce nitrogen oxides. The control unit checks that opening the valve really produces a change in pressure or temperature in the intake. If nothing changes, it stores P0401 (insufficient flow). Related codes: P0400 (general malfunction), P0402 (excessive flow, valve no longer closing), P0403/P0404 (electrical circuit or position).
Is it serious?
The engine runs, often with a slightly unstable idle or a small loss of torque at low rpm. It is not an emergency, but there are two risks: a re-test at the roadworthiness test (warning light on) and, on some diesels, the engine going into limp mode when the control unit gets worried.
The most common causes
- Valve clogged with carbon (a mix of soot and oil vapour from the breather). It sticks closed or no longer opens enough.
- Blocked EGR passages or cooler: the valve moves, but nothing gets through.
- Pressure sensor (DPFE on some makes, boost pressure on others) out of tolerance.
- Vacuum control solenoid valve or cracked vacuum hoses (older models).
- Burnt-out valve motor or erratic position (electric valves).
What to check first
- In the “Sensors” screen of DiagAuto AI, display the commanded EGR and the EGR error (if the car provides them), as well as the intake manifold pressure (MAP). An EGR error that stays large signals a valve that is not following the command; on many engines, opening the EGR also makes the MAP change. The actual valve position is not read by the app: a garage reads it with the manufacturer's tool.
- With the engine cold, locate the valve (often on the intake manifold, on the exhaust side). If it is accessible, remove it: if the inside is black and hard as coal, cleaning is the first step.
- Cleaning: EGR decarbonising cleaner, soft wire brush, patience. Never soak the electrical part.
- After refitting, clear the code and do a mixed drive. If it comes back, suspect the passages or the sensor.
Should you clear the code?
Yes, after cleaning or replacement (the app clears the engine codes after confirmation, without reprogramming anything). “EGR cleaner” additives poured into the fuel tank have a limited effect on a valve that is already stuck.
Indicative cost
Cleaning at a garage: €80 – 200. New EGR valve: €100 – 450 for the part, €200 – 700 fitted. EGR cooler: €300 – 900 fitted. (Indicative, France 2026.)

Frequently asked questions
Can you block off or remove the EGR valve to get rid of P0401?
It is illegal in France (tampering with the emissions control system), it makes the car fail the roadworthiness test (contrôle technique in France, similar to the UK MOT), and the control unit often keeps a fault stored. DiagAuto AI offers no removal and no reprogramming.
How long does cleaning an EGR valve take?
Between 1 and 3 hours depending on access. Some valves are visible as soon as you open the bonnet, others require removing the intake manifold.
