Code P0101 / P0102: mass air flow sensor, clean it before replacing it
What the code means
The mass air flow sensor (MAF) sits after the air filter. It contains a heated wire or film; the more air flows past, the more it cools, and the higher the flow the control unit measures. P0101 means the reading does not match what the control unit expects given the engine speed and throttle. P0102 means the signal is abnormally low (dirt, wiring, dead sensor). P0100 is the generic circuit fault.
Is it serious?
Not immediately dangerous, but the engine may stall, lack power, blow black smoke (too much fuel) and use a lot more fuel. On some diesels: limp mode.
The most common causes
- Clogged air filter or a badly oiled “sports” filter (the oil ends up on the hot wire).
- Intake leak between the MAF sensor and the engine: air gets in without being measured. Split hose, loose clamp.
- Dirty MAF sensor (dust, oil from the crankcase breather).
- Corroded connector or damaged wires (close to engine heat).
- Electrically faulty MAF sensor.
What to check first
- In the “Sensors” screen of DiagAuto AI, display the air flow (MAF, g/s). At idle, a 1.6 to 2.0 L petrol engine gives roughly 2 to 6 g/s (a diesel draws noticeably more air at idle; that is not a fault); under hard acceleration the value should rise quickly and smoothly. A frozen value, or one that tops out low, is suspect.
- Check the fuel trims: a strongly negative or strongly positive LTFT confirms the fuel metering is off. See P0171 / P0174.
- Open the air box: replace the filter if it is dirty.
- Inspect every centimetre of ducting between the MAF sensor and the throttle body, clamps included.
- Clean the sensor with a dedicated product, let it dry for 15 minutes, refit it and clear the code.
Should you clear the code?
Yes, after each step (the app clears the engine codes after confirmation, without any reprogramming). If the code returns within 100 km after cleaning and checking the ducts, replace the MAF sensor, preferably an original part or one from a recognised parts supplier: €15 copies are often worse than the worn part.
Indicative cost (France, 2026)
Air filter: €10 – 30. MAF cleaner: €10. Aftermarket MAF sensor from a recognised supplier: €60 – 200; original: €150 – 350.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with the MAF sensor unplugged as a test?
On many cars, yes, for a few kilometres: the control unit switches to limp mode, and if the engine runs better unplugged, the MAF sensor is suspect. But the warning light comes on and an extra code appears. Do not drive like this for long.
What product should I use to clean a MAF sensor?
Only a dedicated MAF cleaner, never brake cleaner or anything abrasive. Spray it on without touching the hot wire or hot film.
