Which OBD2 adapter to choose?
DiagAuto AI works with ELM327 and compatible adapters, using Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Wi‑Fi. Here are the ones we have tried ourselves, and what makes the difference.
The adapters tried with the app
These tests were carried out by the app's creator on their own vehicles and those of people close to them. A result applies to the unit tested: the quality of generic adapters varies from one batch to another.
| Adapter | Type | Result of our tests |
|---|---|---|
| Vgate vLinker BM | Bluetooth | Our reference. On a BMW 2 Series (2016): full scan of around twenty control units, reading their codes, mileage, sensor monitoring. Fast and stable. |
| Vgate iCar Pro BLE 4.0 | BLE | Connection without pairing, code reading, control unit scan and remembering the adapter validated on a Peugeot Boxer (2010). Compact. |
| Generic ELM327 v1.5 Bluetooth (Bluetooth name “OBDII”) | Bluetooth | Reading and clearing engine codes, emissions checks and sensors on a Peugeot Boxer (2010). Suitable for the standard OBD2 functions; quality varies by seller. |
| Generic ELM327 v1.5 Wi‑Fi | Wi‑Fi | Connection and standard OBD2 reading, with the AI going through mobile data. But on the BMW, the scan found only 2 control units instead of 18 with the vLinker: the adapter accepts certain commands without applying them. Avoid it for the control units of BMW and MINI cars. |

Vehicles on which the app has been tried
- BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (2016): codes from the engine and the other control units, mileage, sensors.
- Peugeot Boxer 2.2 HDi (2010): codes, emissions checks, sensors, clearing.
- Mazda CX-30: scan of 31 control units.
- Renault Clio 3: reading and clearing codes with a real fault.
- Kia Venga (2010): reading codes with a fault induced on the mass air flow sensor.
- Renault Mégane 3 1.5 dCi (2010): used-car purchase check-up, pending codes, recent clearing detected.
This list will grow with the technical logs that users choose to share. Your adapter or your car is not listed? Tell us how it went: contact@diagautoai.eu.
Bluetooth, BLE or Wi‑Fi?
Classic Bluetooth: the simplest and most widespread on Android. Pair it once in the phone's settings, then the app finds it on its own.
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE): no pairing, low power consumption, often compact adapters. The app searches for them directly.
Wi‑Fi: the phone joins the adapter's Wi‑Fi network, which has no Internet access. The app then uses mobile data for the AI: keep it turned on. This is the type most often poorly implemented by clones.
What makes the difference
- A genuine ELM327 chip or equivalent: “v2.1” clones display a fake version number and often lack protocols; “v1.5” ones are generally better made.
- All OBD2 protocols: CAN 11 and 29 bit, ISO 9141, KWP2000, J1850. Essential on cars from before 2008.
- Speed: it matters for real-time sensors and the control unit scan.
- Standby: an adapter left plugged in draws power constantly; unplug it if the car stays parked for a long time.
What to avoid
- Unbranded batches costing a few euros: slowness, missing protocols, disconnections.
- Devices sold “with reprogramming”: DiagAuto AI does not reprogram anything, and these functions carry risks for your control units.
