Why the choice matters
The adapter is the translator between your car and your phone. A poor adapter means a connection that drops, sensors that refresh once per second instead of ten times, missing codes, and in the end the feeling that “the app does not work”. The criteria that make the difference
- Genuine ELM327 chip or a serious equivalent (STN chips, adapters from well-known brands…). Clones present themselves as “v2.1”: a fake version number that often gives away a problematic clone. “v1.5” units are better-made clones, often fine.
- Supported protocols: 11- and 29-bit CAN, ISO 9141, KWP2000, J1850. A good adapter handles them all; essential for cars built before 2008.
- Refresh rate: useful for real-time sensors.
- Automatic sleep mode if you leave it plugged in.
- Size: a compact model goes unnoticed under the dashboard.
